There is no doubt that Marc Marquez is having a great time in his debut Moto GP season. He is currently leading the championship and it seems extremely difficult for his rivals to beat him now, as there are only a handful of races left in the 2013 season. He will need to do something really silly to lose from here onwards.
Despite such dominance, the Spaniard has been a victim of criticism from all nooks and corners. Moto GP pundits have always been critical of him since he was racing at the junior level and his rivals are also not making things easy for him. To make things worse, his team-mate, Daniel Pedrosa also criticized him after the Aragon GP for his over-the-limit racing style.
Even before coming to Moto GP, Marquez cam under the hammer by some of the top class riders for his amateurs maneuvers. During the 2011 Moto2 season, the young rider caused an accident in Australia despite the fact that the checkered flag was waved and he was supposed to slow down. Instead, he kept on pushing hard and hit the bike of another rider. Luckily, there were no serious injuries to anyone and race took place normally.
However, Marquez was penalized for his actions and had to start from the back of the grid. Although he managed to secure the podium from that place as well, he could have finished at the front, had he started higher on the grid.
Star rider Valentino Rossi claimed that he had witnessed the crash live and was scared that something bad could happen. He added that it was a relief for him that the young riders came safe out of the incident, but warned that these things should be controlled in order to avoid fatal crashes. On the other hand, the then Honda rider Casey Stoner also criticized the move of the Spaniard and labelled him ‘immature’.
Nevertheless, the 20-year-old made it to Moto GP, which was a dream for him. There is no doubt that he was immensely talented and had the speed like none other, but he needed to realize that racing should be fair. If the rider in front uses a blocking move, you have to stay back rather than banging wheels with him.
Marquez does not simply realize this simple fact, thus he has been involved in quite a few incidents during the ongoing season. He caused Jorge Lorenzo to crash in Jerez earlier this season, which did not go down well with the latter of the two riders. In fact Lorenzo did not accept the apology from his compatriot for which he also got criticized.
However, the reigning world champion claimed that he was furious at that point and could not have accepted the apology at that stage. He later said that he was normal and had excused the debutant rider for his mistake. Despite this incident, Marquez failed to learn any lesson and said that he had no fear of being penalized for his actions. This was once again quite immature of him, as racing at the highest level does not require you to talk like that. Instead, you have to show some maturity and become a responsible person both on and off the track.
In the recently concluded race at Aragon, Marquez hit his team-mate Pedrosa, which resulted in retirement for the latter of the two riders. Not only that, but he crashed heavily and could have suffered some serious injuries at the end of the day. Pedrosa did not find that to be professional at all and said that he could also do such things. He went onto say that the senior riders on the grid have been trying to calm the youngsters down, but they simply refuse to learn. He insisted that the sport’s governing body should take some action over this matter and penalize drivers, who cause collisions.
Just like Marquez, Marco Simoncelli was also overly aggressive and was often criticized for his immature overtaking moves. At the end of the day, he lost his life while racing, which clearly shows how dangerous it is for the riders out there. They have to be extra careful and set good examples for the youngsters, who follow the sport. There is no doubt that one can always buy the protective gear from an online store like Riderwear.net, but this does not mean that the rider has got no responsibility at all. If you are a professional or amateur racer, you should learn to stay safe and think of others as well. Sometimes, you have to abort the overtaking move in order to avoid a collision and then try again sometime later in the race. Only then will you be recognized among the greats of the game otherwise people will consider you as a cheat.
