Motorcycle Safety Innovations That Never Got Anywhere

There has been a lot of work done on the safety of motorcyclists, especially over the last couple of decades. Despite that, thousands of people either lose their lives or suffer serious injuries every year in roadside crashes. Some of the accidents are not of serious nature, but they still end up taking the life of the rider because of the lack of protective gear.

There is no doubt that quite a few riders are solely responsible for causing accidents and then suffering dangerous consequences. The most common mistakes committed by motorcyclists all over the world are over speeding, breaking lanes, riding while drunk, breaching signals, riding without helmet etc. If these things are taken care of by the rider, there will be lesser chances of getting involved in the accident.
Even if a rider does get involved in a dangerous situation, he can take avoiding action only if he is not speeding, following the rules and in his senses. If, in the worst case scenario, the accident does take place, the biker can get up safe and sound because of the safety gear.

Regardless of how the riders look at their safety, numerous concerned companies have always tried to provide them with good solutions. Some of those innovations turned out to be really nice, but others never got anywhere because of certain flaws in them. RiderWear Security has brought to you a list of some safety tactics that never got anywhere and ended up failing.

The roofs and seat-belts

Just like cars, some companies decided to revolutionize the motorbike industry by introducing two-wheelers with roofs and seat-belts. Although this idea sounds to be really good, but it made the bikes heavier, limited the vision of the rider and above all, made the machine look extremely ugly. Together, all these factors led to a failure of this innovation.

Safety suits

Over the years, various safety suits have been introduced in the market, targeting rider safety. However, most of the ideas have been flawed thus they never managed to get any attention. One of such suits was the sphere, which by name clearly suggests that the rider would be turned into a giant air ball after hitting the ground. The idea seemed to be good, but it could have put the life of a rider into greater risk. As soon as the suit would inflate, the person wearing it will lose control and hit any object in the way or fall down the cliff. This will also put the life of others into danger, as they too will have to take preventive action. Other than this, some suits with airbags have also been introduced without being able to get the public attention.

Leg protectors

The leg protectors were introduced quite some time ago, but they were also not effective as they were thought to be. Leg injuries are quite common in motorcyclists, thus the need of this innovation was felt. They were attached to the sides of the bike, making it look like an ugly machine. However, the knee protectors are far better than them and are used by people all over the world; especially the racers use them regularly.

Speed control

After years of research, a speed control system in the motorbikes was introduced. Whenever the bike broke the maximum speed limit, the throttle stopped, forcing the biker to slow down. However, this idea also proved to be a waste, as it affected the controls and put the rider in danger of getting hit by a high speed vehicle from behind. Similarly, there were quite a few other controls invented, but none of them really got any appreciation from the public.
